Library Day

Hi Everyone,
I would like to start a weekly Library Day at the Library for Home Learners. Here are some of my ideas:
-Library to donate their meeting room (I've heard its big) for Home Learners one hour each week at the same time from Oct 1-May 31.. We could start this year as soon as possible and continue to end of May.
-Informal drop-in meeting for North Okanagan Home Learners of all ages
-Bring board games to play, projects to share/talk about, books to share etc...

Since I'm new in town I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good contact at the Library?
Any other ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Delia

Library Day would be at the Vernon Library. I was trying to find the entrance to their meeting room yesterday and all I saw was doors that open from the inside. The Mission Homeschoolers are doing Library Day so its being done at other libraries.
Other ideas:
-bi-weekly, monthly library days
-Sign in sheet so those people who attend Library Day are responsible for leaving the room neat and tidy and this does not make one person responsible for the room each time
-A way to connect the larger home schooling community

We would be interested in meeting at the library maybe once or twice a month in order to have a get-together with other homeschoolers. I know when my kids were in school they used a story room that is out between the washrooms, in the outer entranceway. I would think that the children's librarian would be a good person to talk to but I don't know her name.

Monica or Judy do toddler and preschool story times, so I think they are the "children's librarians"

oh and I would be interested in taking part in this ;0) Thank you Delia :0)

We used to do this through the winter months,at the community room above the credit union by London Drugs. The room was free and lots of fun, this was about 6 years ago.The library meeting room is avaiable at a cost ,as far as I know.Great idea ,we would be interested in this or something similiar. Thanks Debby

More ideas:
-display table for show and tell items i.e. special rock, artwork, model
-display table for kids selling crafts/items as well
-Bring board games to play i.e. checkers, chess, scrabble, monopoly etc...
-Library Day (one hour) twice monthly i.e. mid-month and end of month from Sept 30-May 15th (I'm going by my knowledge of Vernon weather)

To do:
-Get the word out to all North Okanagan Home Learners - NOCHE, Blog, Vernon Online School, Self-Design, Neighbours who are Home Schooling as I think the Library needs to see a need (a long list of names) before they will agree to donate room (or very least admission by donation)
-Compile a list of parent names, phone numbers, location and children's first names who are interested in attending - e-mail Delia names: b.major@telus.net
-Present this (long) list of names to library management and ask them to donate room for one hour twice monthly from Sept 30-May 15

I'm wondering if the Library has tables in their meeting room. I'm going to try to see it. Display tables would be needed and tables and chairs would be good for kids to play board games although they could play on the carpet...

Yes, the librarian says there are tables and 25 chairs in their only meeting room which has an entrance between the washrooms. I couldn't see it today as it was being used. The cost is $30 for 3 hours. Even if you want it for one hour you have to pay the 3 hour rate. I was given the business card of the head librarian when I asked if school children have to pay to use the meeting room. I'm going to look at the room on Sunday and start working on my long list of names to present to the head librarian....

Thanks Debby for the info on the community room...

Would people prefer one hour, two hours or three hours?

Is two hours a better time to meet most people's needs or is it too long?

Would people prefer once a month or twice a month?

Hi Delia, I think two hours would allow for a more relaxed play and arrival time. I'm okay with either one or two times a month. I guess we could try twice a month and see how well attended it is.
Thanks for arranging this!

I visited the Vernon Library meeting room today and I admit I'm disappointed....There are no windows and its definitely seen better days not to mention possible ventilation problems... I'm going to research alternative locations. Debby, is the community room above the Interior Credit Union the one you used to go to in the Winter months 6 years ago? Any other free community rooms?

Thanks for this, Delia. I think the People Place has free community rooms? I think La Leche League used to meet there for that reason. Worth checking out, anyway. There has to be somewhere. You can add our names to the list. I think this is a great idea.

Elementary School Multi-Purpose room:
I'm also going to look into using the multi-purpose room at an elementary school with friday afternoons off. Can anyone suggest Elementary schools in town I could look into?

I know a homeschooling group used to use the multipurpose room at Kidston a few years ago for arts and crafts.

Yes the community room we used was above the credit union. My daughters class ,when registered with the old Outreach program, now V-Learn (school district #22), went to Kidston school ,for art and music.once a week. Not sure if this comment above is thinking of this program. This was about 6 years ago as well. Debby

Sorry, Eryn was really me. And the community room above the Interior Savings Credit Union is no longer available. They turned it into offices. And Yes, Debby, that is what I was thinking of at Kidston. But Sun FM also used to have a room in the alpine centre for this kind of thing, as well. I am not sure if they are still doing it. Many years ago when this group first started, we used to use the Coldstream Women's Institute. I think we paid $35 for the afternoon but they could have let us use it for free but the lady in charge at the time didn't approve of homeschooling... After that we used the Okanagan Landing Community Hall - but that was the old one that burnt down. But you could contact the people who organize the new one and see what they say - that is a nice spot, too, right on the beach.

For the last couple of years I've been contemplating the possibilities of transforming vLearn into more of our own community learning center. I'm working on a proposal to submit to vLearn, with ideas such as creating a vibrant drop-in center with kindergarten-like play areas for younger children (with natural toys such as a wooden kitchen/doll house/train set ... a place where our younger homelearners can come together to play), tables and carpet space for older kids to play co-operative games/brainstorm environmental projects/co-write plays for the whole group to perform/microscopes for observations after a walk together.
The vLearn space has lots of potential ... they have a large play-yard, a gym, lots of rooms of varying shapes and sizes, and they're quite central.
I've been in conversation with the staff there and they're open to our input/ideas. So, I thought maybe we could brainstorm what we want and put it out there ...
I've heard that the Mission mums tried this sort of thing with the DL there but I'm not sure how that's going at this point. Do you know Delia?
